Where We Work

WASHplus continues to explore new opportunities to engage in WASH and IAP activities in the field.  Our first two country programs are underway n Madagascar and Zambia, and plans are also in progress to work in several other countries including Bangladesh, Benin, Kenya and Liberia.  Updates on these activities will be available soon.

	Bangladesh - WASHplus is working on the ground on a two-phase activity to contribute to an improved cookstove market environment that encourages increased uptake of a range of improved stove. WASHplus is also working in four subdistricts in the southwestern coastal area of Bangladesh to improve access to much needed water, sanitation, and hygiene technologies.
	Benin - WASHplus is implementing the Urban Hygiene Improvement Program, a three-year hygiene behavior change activity focused on hand washing and household water treatment funded by USAID/Benin as part of its Global Health Initiative, in the most underserved neighborhoods of Cotonou.
	Kenya - Using the Small Doable Action approach, WASHplus operates a WASH-HIV integration program in Kenya that is working through the government’s public health system to build capacity and provide inclusive sanitation options for Kenya’s vulnerable populations. WASHplus is also engaging in community-led total sanitation efforts to contribute to vision of an Open Defecation Free Kenya.
	Madagascar - WASHplus is exploring public-private sanitation solutions in several communes in Madagascar. A WASHplus partner, Practica Foundation, conducted an assessment of sludge management options in two communities with public-private toilet-shower facilities, and is now working on a pilot project to test feasible options for broader application.
	Mali - In northern Mali WASHplus is implementing a two-year WASH and nutrition project in 18 communes in three districts of the Mopti Region. The project aims to improve the nutritional status of women of reproductive age and their children (especially those under 2 years of age) through the adoption of complementary WASH and nutrition behaviors.
	Uganda - In Uganda, WASHplus works in the districts of Kisoro, Kabale, and Kanungu to strengthen the capacity of USAID implementing partners—SPRING, Community Connector, STAR-SW, among others—to integrate WASH into both nutrition and HIV activities. In these communities access to water is a burden borne by women and children who carry small buckets or jerry cans to distant water points over difficult terrain.
	Zambia – A new WASHplus activity funded by USAID Zambia known as SPLASH (Schools Promoting Learning Advancement through Sanitation and Hygiene) is getting underway in Zambia to support the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing to improve school water supply, sanitation, and hygiene in two provinces.
